Chairman’s Message

Dear Friends,

I extend a warm & hearty welcome to all members & the invited guests gathered here to witness the inception of the Global Cancer Trust in the web world.

Cancer has come to represent a word that inevitably stands for terminal illness, helplessness, sheer grief & pain.

The very basic of this menace needs a fresh re-look, an organic change in our psychological perspectives where all stake holders of the society pledge to fight this menace till the very end.

Global Cancer Trust is one of the torchbearers of this stake holder group who have launched a “Crusade against Cancer” at the Royal Bengal Room, Kolkata on the February 19th, 2010 on the occasion of our inaugural ceremony. Inaugurated by Prof. R. A. Badwe, Director (Tata Memorial Center, Mumbai), Dr. Sneh Desai (Ph.D) (Renowned Motivator), Prof. S. S. Shastri, H.O.D. Preventive Oncology, Dr. Pankaj Chaturvedi, Head of Unit Head Neck Oncology.

Breast Cancer & Cervical Cancer are most common cause of death for our sisters & mothers. Alas large fractions of patients present in late stage due to sheer ignorance.

Health ignorance is widely prevalent, irrespective of social, economical & educational status. We want to break the ignorance by spreading awareness. “As cancer is curable if detected early”.

Tobacco continues to be one of the largest preventable causes of disease & death. Despite several efforts & strong initiatives by the government as well as anti-tobacco advocacy groups, India continues to be one of the leading manufacturer & consumer of tobacco in the world. Hence, the need of the hour is to integrate & strengthen our efforts in cancer prevention. This can be achieved by improving the public health awareness & by repeated seminars to reinforce the message that “Cancer is Preventable” too. We are putting our efforts principally towards the school children, college students, rural & semi-urban population.

While much of the allocations in the present day are focused on research in cancer, the emphasis on cancer prevention has been much trivialized.

It is in this regard that we invite you as responsible members of our society to come forward & participate in this movement by sparing some time out of your valuable schedule & contribute with your valuable suggestions & ideas & a pledge for a better lifestyle by kicking habits which lead us to devastating consequences.

The Global Cancer Trust has shouldered the task to:

  • Educate the masses about cancer’s prevention, health awareness {with emphasis on students(school children, college students), rural areas} & anti-tobacco awareness
  • Conduct health camp in rural as outreach program that would enhance damage control by screening, diagnosis & treatment(in future)
  • Publish a newsletter at regular intervals that would be targeted to physicians & masses to awaken them so as to form a platform for cancer prevention.

Cancer is preventable too. It is time we deploy our best efforts & implement meaningful strategies for cancer prevention. Help us make an impact by joining us in this

Overview

GLOBAL CANCER TRUST

GCT is a non government organization headed by group of people from different walks of life, working against Tobacco Cancer. The alarming numbers of Mouth Cancer Cases, particularly in the young generation, has made a great impact on some thoughtful persons of the society, who felt a great need of making them aware of unforeseen danger dangling on their head due to consumption of Tobacco. The major reason of mouth cancer is due to consumption of Gutkha (Pan Masala + Tobacco), Khaini, Cigarette etc. Hence GCT was formed. Now, GCT has undertaken a difficult endeavor of making tobacco free Society. To reach the goal and to tackle the situation on a greater scale GCT wishes to form “Scouts of GCT” in each school/college/institution/society under the leadership of Dr. Vikash K Agarwal.

The Scouts of GCT

YOUTH is another name of POWER. The future of our country is dependent upon youth of today who will run it tomorrow. And this inheritance cycle will keep on moving in decades and centuries to come ahead. “Nip In The Bud” —Kill the urge of Tobacco consumption before it grows into strong addiction. Start guarding the society. Form strong organizations/ section in the Colleges, Schools and other wings of Youth Organizations who will keep a watch/ guard, conduct regular awareness programs, participate and be a part of mammoth programs to be organized for public awareness at large —The Scouts of GCT.

Formation of Scout of GCT:

We are getting support of Principal/Director of every School and College and presenting our concept of forming of “The Scouts of GCT” towards discharge of social responsibility of students. The Principal or any other nominated teacher/professor will be “Lead Scout” of that wing. The Students will be awarded social points for conducting the programs/ or on achieving the goals/ benchmark of GCT e.g. if a student make a person quitter—50 points to student and 5 points to the principal; Conduction of Awareness program — 100 points to be divided among Lead Scout and Students like wise. The activities/ benchmark with points can be determined by GCT. The willing Student/Principal members have to fulfill the following criteria:

  1. Should not be addicted to / consumer of tobacco in any form (If he is, he has to quit the habit before joining).
  2. Has to sign a declaration/ take oath that he will not consume tobacco in future.
  3. Will conduct/ participate in awareness programs in the School/ College
  4. Try to prevent/persuade fellow and family members from consuming tobacco. For any help GCT team is always ready.
  5. Sign a declaration in this respect.
  6. No economic/joining fees.

Activities of “The Scouts of GCT”

These awareness programs can be associated with other health related subjects like— Cardiac, Diabetes, Obesity, Gynecology (for female wing) etc. This activity should have presence of GCT official for allocation of Social Service Points. — 100 points per program to the body, 10 points to every participant.
  2. Stop consumption of tobacco within the compound or campus by convincing fellow students, teachers and other officials of the institute. This would happen in 2 stages.
Stage 1: The quitter fills Pledge Form and fills up a Quitter’s Opinion Form after 3 months of quitting.
Stage 2: After 3 months we verify it with the nearest kith or kin, that he/she has actually been able to maintain status quo. -50 points to individual for converting one quitter after confirmation.
